Journal
Review each trading day on the terminal's own chart, grade your trades, keep a daily log and lessons, and see your results by emotion, mistake, grade and entry time.
The Journal is where you review your trading one day at a time. Closed trades from your connected accounts arrive on their own. Each day gets a card with its trades drawn on the terminal’s chart, the day’s numbers, and room for a grade, an emotion and a lesson. From a day you can open any trade for a full review or write a daily log, and Reports shows your results grouped by what you recorded.
A day card and its chart, the calendar, a trade's review page, Reports and the daily log.
Open the Journal
Click Journal in your navigation. It’s on by default. To hide it, turn off its switch in Settings. If Journal isn’t in your navigation and its switch there is marked Requires access, your role doesn’t include the Journal. Ask whoever runs your workspace.
There’s nothing to set up. When a trade on a connected account closes, it’s added to the Journal, and its chart follows shortly after. Open positions stay in the terminal until they close.
Choose what you see
The bar under the Journal heading sets what every view shows:
- Days and Reports switch between your day cards and your reports.
- The account picker shows All real accounts or one account.
- The currency picker chooses which currency’s trades you see. Amounts in different currencies are never added together, so if your accounts use more than one currency, look at each in turn.
- Net, Gross and R show results after costs, before costs, or as a multiple of the risk you took. See How the numbers work.
- The eye button hides amounts, notes and screenshots, for when you share your screen or take a screenshot. Click it again to show them.
The Journal remembers Net, Gross or R and the eye setting in this browser.
Days are UTC days, set by the time each trade closed. A trade that closes after midnight UTC belongs to the next day.
The calendar
On a wide screen the calendar sits beside your day cards. On a narrower screen, open it with the calendar button next to the eye.
- The arrows move between months. The month’s total sits beside them, with the number of winning and losing days.
- Each day shows its result, and Week adds up each week’s days inside this month.
- Click a day to jump to its card.
The day card
Each day with closed trades gets a card, newest first. Show older days at the bottom loads more. The card’s header shows the date, how many trades closed and the day’s result. Click the header to fold the card away.
- Grade and emotion. The two pickers at the top grade the day’s execution and record its main emotion. They save as soon as you choose.
- Daily log opens that day’s log. See Daily log.
- The chart draws the day’s trades on the terminal’s own chart, from your broker’s 1-minute candles, with each entry, exit and result marked. It follows the terminal’s Trade history display setting: arrows for each entry and exit, the entry, stop and target levels, or both. See Your trade history on the chart. Point at a trade in the table and the chart frames that trade. If a trade’s candles haven’t been stored yet, a line under the chart says so.
- The numbers:
- Win rate.
- Costs: commission, swap and fees on the day’s closed trades.
- Day high and Day low: the best and worst running result during the day.
- Max potential profit and Max potential loss: each trade’s best and worst price reached, added up. The trades didn’t all reach them at the same moment.
- Trades with R: how many of the day’s trades have a risk to measure R against.
- Trades.
- Lesson. Type one thing to repeat or change tomorrow and click Save. Save to lessons also adds it to your lessons library.
- The trade table lists each trade with its time in UTC, grade, result, R, best price reached and emotion. You can grade a trade and pick its emotion right in the table. A dot after the side means you haven’t reviewed the trade yet. Click the symbol to open its review.
A day with no closed trades can still have a grade, emotion, lesson and daily log. On a phone the table shows fewer columns; open a trade to see everything.
Review a trade
Click a trade’s symbol in a day card to open its review page.
At the top are Back to Journal, the symbol, whether the trade was long or short, whether it came from your broker or you added it by hand, and whether you’ve reviewed it. The result sits on the right.
- Previous trade and Next trade step through the trades in this month, account and currency. The up and down arrow keys do the same while you aren’t typing. The month picker changes the month, and Unreviewed only limits the steps to trades you haven’t reviewed.
- The chart shows the trade on the terminal’s chart, from your broker’s 1-minute bid candles, in UTC.
- The plan row shows the trade’s target, stop, R, risk, planned R, entry and exit prices, open and close times, and lots.
- Result and costs shows the net and gross result, commission, swap and fees, the best and worst the trade reached while it was open, how much of the best you kept, how long you held it, the session it opened in, and Risk from: where its risk came from. See How the numbers work.
- Executions lists every fill with its time, lots, price, commission, swap and fee.
- Screenshots holds up to 10 images of the trade, PNG, JPEG or WebP, under 4 MB each. Each one saves as soon as you add it.
Fill in the review
The Trade review panel holds your review of the trade:
- Execution grade: Perfect execution, Good execution, Poor execution or Failed execution. Grade how well you followed your plan, win or lose.
- Main emotion: such as Calm, Focused, Fearful or Greedy.
- Setup: up to 3 of Breakout, Pullback, Reversal, Trend continuation, Range, News, Scalp and Swing.
- Mistakes: choose No mistakes, or up to 5 mistake tags such as Early entry, Moved stop or Revenge trade. Clear assessment takes your answer back. Blank means you haven’t assessed mistakes yet.
- Strategy: one of your saved strategies.
- Notes: write freely, or click Use review template for Plan, What happened and Review headings.
The review doesn’t save on its own:
- Save review saves it.
- Mark reviewed and continue saves it, marks the trade reviewed and opens the next trade you haven’t reviewed.
If you try to leave with unsaved changes, the Journal asks before you go.
Review queue
Review queue, at the top of the Journal, shows how many trades in this month, account and currency you haven’t reviewed. Click it to open the first one with Unreviewed only on, then work through the rest with Mark reviewed and continue. The review page also lists them under Review queue, with each trade’s result.
Daily log
Daily log on a day card opens your private log for that UTC day. One log covers all your accounts.
- A day without a log opens with the Daily review template ready. Nothing is saved until you change it or click Save log.
- Start with a template offers Daily review, Trade plan, Weekly review and Psychology check-in. Each starts with a snapshot of the day’s numbers for the selected account and currency, then a few questions to answer. If your log already has text, the Journal asks before replacing it.
- The toolbar sets headings and adds bold, italic, underline, lists, checklists and quotes.
- One lesson to carry forward, at the bottom, keeps a lesson with the log.
- The log saves on its own a few seconds after you stop typing. Save log, or Ctrl + S (⌘ + S on a Mac), saves straight away. Drafts you haven’t saved stay in this tab when you close the log or switch days.
Lessons library
Lessons, at the top of the Journal, opens your lessons library: every lesson you’ve saved from a day card or a daily log, with the day it came from. Search to find one. Deleting a lesson removes it from the library only; the daily log it came from stays as it was.
Reports
Reports groups the closed trades in the selected month, account and currency:
- Emotion, Mistakes and Execution grade, from your reviews.
- Entry timing, by trading session or by UTC hour.
- Trades per day.
Each group shows how many trades it holds, with their total and average result. An average needs at least 10 trades, or 10 days for Trades per day. Groups with fewer than 30 are muted and marked Small sample: treat them as an observation, not a pattern. Reports describe what you recorded. They don’t explain what caused it.
Add a trade by hand
Add trade, at the top of the Journal, records a closed trade that didn’t come from a connected account.
- Click Add trade.
- Fill in the broker symbol, the entry and exit times in UTC, the entry and exit prices, the volume in lots, the net P&L your broker reported and the account currency.
- Optional: choose an account and the side, add your planned stop and target, and tick I know all three cost amounts to enter the commission, swap and fee.
- Click Save trade. The Journal opens the trade’s day.
You can’t edit or delete a trade you’ve added by hand, so check it before you save.
Default risk per trade
R needs the risk you took on a trade. The Journal takes it from the first of these it finds:
- The stop loss you set in the order ticket when you placed the trade.
- The stop on the order that opened the trade.
- The first stop seen on the position.
- Your default risk per trade.
A trade without any of them has no R. To give those trades one, set a default:
- Click the sliders button beside Lessons at the top of the Journal. Its tooltip reads Default risk per trade.
- Under Risk fallback, choose Fixed amount.
- Enter the Currency and the Risk per trade, then click Save risk setting.
- With All real accounts selected, you set your personal default. With one account selected, that account can use your personal default, its own amount, or none.
- The currency must match the account’s. Amounts are never converted.
- Saving also updates past trades that can use the default. A trade’s own stop always comes first, and the default never changes a trade’s result.
How the numbers work
- Net is your broker’s profit plus commission and swap, plus a fee when your broker reports one. It matches the terminal.
- Gross is the result before costs.
- R is the net result divided by the risk at entry.
- Best reached and Worst reached are the most the trade was worth and the deepest it went against you while it was open, before costs, read from your broker’s 1-minute bid candles. Kept of the move is a winning trade’s net result as a share of its best.
- A trade that opened and closed inside one candle has no best or worst. For a trade shorter than a whole candle, or one with missing candles, they may miss part of the move. The trade’s review says which applies.
- When a trade in a day, week or month is missing a value, the total shows Unavailable rather than a partial sum.
