Academy
Follow your progress on your learning homepage, work through your group's courses, let video and PDF lessons complete on their own, keep private notes beside each lesson, time your study sessions, and arrange the homepage for your students if you run the Academy.
The Academy holds your group’s courses: PDFs, videos and written lessons, organized into courses, sections and lessons. Everyone in the group studies the same material. Your notes are private to you. The Academy also keeps a record of how you study each lesson, described under What the Academy records.
Your learning homepage
Open Academy from the sidebar. It opens on your learning homepage, which greets you by name.
Completed shows how many lessons you’ve completed, with a progress bar for each course. By type shows your progress through Core lessons and Community recordings, as a count and a percentage.
Learning activity has one square per day for the last 53 weeks. A day turns active when you complete at least one lesson; time spent studying doesn’t count on its own. Above the grid are your Current streak, Longest streak, Active days and lessons Completed. Below it, Weekly target counts your active days this week out of 3. Click a square to see how many lessons you completed that day.
Your courses has a card for each course with your progress. Use All, Core lessons and Recordings to filter them.
Curriculum structure lists every course, its sections and their lessons, with Completed, Open lesson or Locked beside each lesson. Coming to the academy shows courses your group plans to add, with their release date when one is set.
If your group hasn’t published anything yet, the homepage says Your academy is taking shape.
Your group’s authors decide the order of the blocks on the homepage, and can leave some out. Everyone in the group sees the same layout.
Choose your colours
The menu at the top of the homepage sets the colours of your progress bars, the completion ring and the activity squares:
- Green / red: the green the rest of the app uses for gains.
- Monochrome: greys.
- Terminal candles: the up colour of the candle scheme you chart with, including a custom scheme.
It’s the same colour profile as Analysis and the dashboard, so changing it here changes them too. It starts on Green / red and is saved on this device.
Find a lesson
- Open Academy from the sidebar.
- On a course card, click Start learning. Once you’ve completed a lesson in that course, the button reads Continue learning and opens the next lesson you haven’t completed. When you’ve completed them all, it reads Review course.
- To pick a lesson yourself, open a course and a section under Curriculum structure, then click the lesson.
Lessons that unlock in order
Some courses unlock their lessons one at a time. Their card says Lessons unlock in order. In those courses, a lesson opens once you’ve completed the lessons before it, following the order of sections and lessons. Later lessons show a lock and Locked.
If you open a locked lesson, the page says This lesson is locked and names the lesson to complete first, with a button that takes you there. At the bottom of a lesson, the link to a locked next lesson reads Complete earlier lessons to unlock and the lesson’s name. Lessons you’ve already completed always stay open to review.
Study a lesson
A lesson opens in three panes on a desktop screen: the course outline on the left, the lesson in the middle and your notes on the right. Drag the dividers to resize them. On a phone, the lesson fills the screen, and the Curriculum and Notes buttons open the other two panes.
Under the lesson are four tabs:
- Overview: what the lesson covers, if your mentor has added a summary.
- Resources: links your mentor attached to the lesson.
- Discussion: the lesson’s thread in your group’s community, if your group has set one up. If you’re not a member yet, click Join lesson discussions. Click an author’s name to send them a direct message.
- Study: an optional study timer and your session history.
Links at the bottom take you to the previous and next lesson. Back to Academy returns to your homepage.
Video and PDF lessons reopen where you left off: the video at the point where you stopped, the PDF on the last page you viewed. A video you left in its first few seconds or near its end starts from the beginning.
Complete a lesson
Video and PDF lessons complete on their own:
- A video completes once you’ve watched 90% of it. Only the parts that play count, so skipping ahead doesn’t.
- A PDF completes once you’ve viewed every page.
Beside Mark complete, a line shows how far you are, for example “Completes on its own at 90% watched. You have watched 42%.” or “Completes on its own once you have viewed every page. 2 of 4 pages viewed.” When the lesson completes, a message says “Lesson completed. Your course progress is updated.” If a video has played for a minute and the line still shows no percentage, the Academy can’t follow that player, so click Mark complete once you’ve watched it.
For a written lesson, or to count a video or PDF before it completes on its own, click Mark complete under it. The button changes to Lesson completed, and the lesson counts toward your course progress and your learning activity straight away. A lesson counts once, however many times you come back to it. In a course whose lessons unlock in order, a lesson that completes on its own unlocks the next one, just as Mark complete does.
Take notes
Notes belong to the lesson you’re on, and only you can see them.
- In the Notes pane, click New.
- Type a title where it says “Untitled note”, then press Enter to move into the body.
- Write your notes. Type / to add headings, lists, checklists, tables, images and other blocks.
- Keep going. Notes save as you type, and the pane shows Saved once your changes are stored.
To go back to an earlier note, choose it from the note menu at the top of the pane. Your notes save before another lesson opens. If they can’t be saved, you stay on the current lesson and can retry.
What the Academy records
While you study, the Academy records your time on each lesson, how much of each video you watch, the pages of each PDF you view, where you stopped, which lessons you complete and whether they completed on their own, and how many notes and discussion replies you write. You don’t need to start anything: this record is how lessons complete on their own and reopen where you left off.
Time counts while the lesson is on screen and you’ve used the page in the last five minutes, and while its video plays. If you have lessons open in more than one tab, only one of them records at a time.
Administrators, and anyone whose role includes View learner activity, have access to this record for every learner. It holds how many notes you’ve written, not what they say.
Time your study sessions
The study timer is optional and separate from the record above. It counts focused study time only after you start a session, and Today, Total and Session history show only your timed sessions.
- Open a lesson and choose the Study tab.
- Choose Count up to see how long you’ve been studying, or Countdown to set a focus period of 15 min, 25 min or 45 min.
- Click Start study session.
Pause and Resume stop and restart the timer. It also pauses on its own while the lesson is in the background, for example when you switch to another tab or app, and it only counts one tab or device at a time. Today and Total show your timed study on this lesson.
Session history starts folded. Click it to see your saved sessions on this lesson, grouped by day, with each session’s start time and length.
Lessons you’ve timed also appear in the Academy lane on your dashboard, so you can pick up where you left off.
The assistant’s curriculum
The Tether Assistant curriculum link at the top of the homepage lists the teaching material Tether Assistant draws on, and the curriculum editions your group has published. See Tether Assistant.
If you manage the Academy
Administrators, and anyone whose role includes Edit the academy, see four more controls: Arrange page, Edit curriculum and Academy settings at the top of the homepage, and Manage upcoming beside Coming to the academy.
Arrange the homepage
Arrange page sets out the homepage the way every student in your group sees it.
- Click Arrange page. Each block gets a handle, a Hide button and a menu.
- Drag a block by its handle to move it. Completed and By type sit side by side when they’re next to each other.
- Click Hide to leave a block off your students’ homepage. It stays on your page, marked Hidden from students, until you click Show.
- Drag the course cards under Your courses, the sections and lessons under Curriculum structure, and the courses under Coming to the academy into order.
- Click Done arranging.
Each change saves as you make it. Every block, course, section, lesson and upcoming course also has a menu with Move up and Move down, so you can arrange the page from the keyboard. Moving a lesson into another section asks you to confirm first. If a change can’t be saved, it’s undone and a message says so.
Courses keep one order everywhere: on the homepage, in Academy settings and in the curriculum editor. Hiding a block only changes the homepage. The courses and lessons in it stay open to your students.
Opening Arrange page, dragging Learning activity to the top, hiding By type, then Done arranging.
Edit the curriculum
Edit curriculum switches the homepage to the curriculum editor. Student homepage switches back.
- Add Volume creates a course with a title and an optional description.
- Inside a course, add sections and lessons. A lesson can be a YouTube video, a PDF, an MP4 video, or notes only.
- Drag courses, sections and lessons by their handles to reorder them.
- The settings icon next to Add Volume opens Hierarchy names, where you rename the levels for your group. The new names appear on the editor’s buttons and counts.
- On a lesson, Edit lesson details and Edit resources change the overview and the list of links. A lesson can have up to 20 links.
Academy settings
Academy settings opens a page with each course’s learning settings. Changes save automatically.
- Drag a course card by its handle to change the course order.
- Course type files the course under Core lessons or Community recordings on the homepage.
- Sequential learning makes the course’s lessons unlock in order for students. Authors can still open every lesson. Turning it off keeps everyone’s progress.
Upcoming courses
Manage upcoming adds and edits upcoming course announcements. Each one has a Course title, a Short description, an optional Release date and time in UTC, a Visibility and a Cover style. Keep it as a draft that only editors see, or announce it to students. Preview card shows it as students will see it. Drag announcements by their handles to change the order. Announcing a date doesn’t publish any lessons.
Let a mentor edit the Academy
Edit the academy is a permission in the Academy group of People > Roles. It covers arranging the homepage, editing the curriculum, Academy settings and upcoming courses, and opens no other admin page. Administrators already have it. To let mentors edit the Academy without other admin access, an administrator can give them a role that holds only Edit the academy, such as an Academy editor role.
